PHILADELPHIA (September 2, 2026) — Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner issued the following statement regarding the Common Pleas Court’s issuance of an injunction against the operator of Nipsey’s Hookah Lounge, the illegal speakeasy where off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry was killed on Aug. 16:
“Today’s Common Pleas Court ruling effectively shuts down this illegal speakeasy, which has been a nuisance in the Southwest Philadelphia community and was the site of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry. While the Philadelphia Police Department’s investigation remains ongoing and we await their recommendation, what we do know is that this establishment — and others like it — operated outside the law and was a problem waiting to happen.
“We hope this puts other operators of illegal nuisance businesses on notice that residents do not want you operating in our communities and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office will use every legal tool at our disposal to shut down your operations in the interest of public safety. As we have continuously said, those who break the law in Philadelphia will be held appropriately accountable.
“We respect the Court for its decision and we thank the DAO’s Public Nuisance Task Force and other collaborating units for its excellent work. We will continue to work with our community and law enforcement partners to make Philadelphia safer and freer.”
