PHILADELPHIA (August 27, 2026) — District Attorney Larry Krasner discussed new developments Thursday in the investigation into the fatal shooting that claimed the life of off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry and seriously injured another person on Aug. 16, 2026.
“I met with the family of Officer Barry — as I have done in many homicide cases — to ensure they are receiving appropriate support from our office, to provide them with as much information as possible regarding the investigation, and to learn what information they might have regarding this tragic event,” said District Attorney Larry Krasner. “This is still a very active and ongoing investigation and we are not ready to draw any conclusions at this time. Interviews are still being conducted and evidence is still being gathered. Our main goal is to get this right, and we will take all the time necessary to do a thorough and comprehensive investigation while the Philadelphia Police Department conducts its own investigation.”
As part of the investigation, the DAO has also filed a petition to close Nipsey’s Hookah Lounge, the speakeasy illegal establishment where this incident took place, and the Court of Common Pleas has granted the Commonwealth’s petition for relief. The hearing is scheduled for September 2, 2026 at 10 a.m. in City Hall Courtroom 275.
“Our investigation shows that the establishment violated numerous laws and was cited by several neighbors as a nuisance establishment,” DA Krasner added.
