PHILADELPHIA (April 28, 2025)—Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner on Monday announced the conviction of Talim Hunt (DOB 11/16/00) for his role in the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Cody Hargett in October 2022. Hunt was also convicted of shooting and wounding Hargett approximately two weeks prior to his death.

A Philadelphia jury found Hunt guilty of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Assault (F1), two counts of VUFA 6106 (F3), and two counts of Possession of an Instrument of Crime (M1) on April 24, 2025.

On the morning of September 20, 2022, Cody Hargett arrived at the defendant’s home located on the 5200 block of Sydenham Street in the city’s Logan section. It is not clear to investigators what transpired in the next minute or two, but surveillance footage from a residence across the street obtained by investigators showed Hargett suddenly fleeing the residence; the defendant can then be seen pursuing Hargett with a handgun and opening fire, striking him twice in the right shoulder. Investigators were not able to determine a motive for this incident.

On the afternoon of October 9, 2022, Hargett returned to Hunt’s residence. Both men remained outside as they conversed for several minutes before a physical altercation ensued when Hargett grabbed the defendant. Hunt subsequently produced a firearm and opened fire, striking Hargett a total of nine times. Toward the end of the incident, the defendant stood over the victim as he lay face down on the street, shooting him seven times in the back. Hargett died from his injuries shortly after arriving at Einstein Medical Center.

Investigators utilized cell phone location data to determine that Hunt was present at the scene during both shootings. Additional evidence recovered from the defendant’s phone further implicated him in the homicide. Police also located an Apple AirPod and lighter at the crime scene containing Hunt’s DNA. Investigators were unable to determine a motive for the shootings.

Hunt was sentenced by Judge Roxanne Covington to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

“I commend Assistant District Attorney Josh Myers of our Homicide and Non-Fatal Shooting Unit for successfully prosecuting this case,” said District Attorney Krasner. “I also thank the Philadelphia Police Department for their excellent investigation and the jury for their careful consideration and deliberation of the facts in this case and for holding Mr. Hunt accountable for his flagrant disregard for public safety.”

“It was absolutely my privilege to help secure some justice for Cody Hargett, his family, and the city of Philadelphia,” said ADA Myers. “I truly hope that this outcome brings at least some solace to Cody’s family.”

“I would like to thank the Logan community, Assistant District Attorney Myers, District Attorney Krasner, and Philadelphia Homicide Detectives for bringing justice in this case,” said Quindel Ladsen, one of Hargett’s brothers. “Cody was a confidant and provider to our family, and we no longer have that. Finally, I want to urge our adults to try and connect with our city’s young men so that they don’t make the same mistake that Talim Hunt did.”
