DA Krasner Statement on Welcoming Asylum Seekers From Texas

PHILADELPHIA (November 15, 2022) – District Attorney Larry Krasner issued the following statement on Texas Governor Greg Abbott‘s decision to send a bus carrying asylum seekers to Philadelphia:

“Philadelphia remains the City of Brotherly Love and Sisterly Affection. We are a welcoming people who are passionate about justice and equality. I hope to personally help welcome the refuge seekers to our community, and my office will assist in offering support and services upon their arrival.

“I also respectfully remind Governor Abbott and his circle that callous political stunts have consequences, but crimes have consequences that are much more serious. If my office, upon investigation, determines that crimes put bus riders in those seats (for example, fraudulent promises, threats, coercion, or actions that constitute kidnapping or human trafficking or any other crimes), the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office will not hesitate to bring criminal charges where the law permits or work with other criminal justice partners to prosecute these offenders in criminal court.”
