PHILADELPHIA (May 25, 2022) — District Attorney Larry Krasner on Wednesday issued the following statement on Philadelphia Police Officer Thomas Munz, Jr., who was killed while off-duty in a vehicle crash in South Philadelphia:
“I join the city in mourning the loss of Officer Thomas Munz, Jr., who was tragically killed in a vehicle crash last night. The District Attorney’s Office extends our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and colleagues in the Department. The events leading up to the crash are currently being investigated, and we stand ready to support the PPD and other involved agencies as needed.
“The facts known at this time are that traffic violence here in Philly and across the nation have reached historic and alarming numbers over the past several years. Public agencies at all levels of government must simply do much more, and faster, to improve road safety for everyone and reduce these often preventable tragedies.
“Finally, my office’s investigation of the 2020 shooting death by police of Walter Wallace, Jr., a 27-year-old father of nine, is nearing the end of its course. We will have no further comment until such time as a resolution can be announced.”
