Thanks to Assistant District Attorney John Paul Bezerra of our Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit for helping secure justice in a case involving a defendant accused of committing a non-fatal shooting that stemmed from a domestic dispute. On the evening of October 4, 2020, the defendant repeatedly texted, called, and harassed his ex-partner face-to-face. at her new boyfriend’s residence. The complainant’s boyfriend eventually confronted the defendant, and the two men argued. The defendant pulled a firearm and fired seven shots, four of which struck the complainant, before fleeing the scene. The complainant suffered injuries ranging from a shattered femur to damage to his bladder and bowels, requiring multiple surgeries. The defendant was found guilty after a waiver trial of Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury, VUFA-6106, Reckless Endangerment, and related charges. He is currently scheduled for sentencing before the Hon. Anthony Kyriakakis in April.
