At the District Attorney’s Transparency Analytics (DATA) Lab, we strive to promote data transparency, expand data accessibility, and foster public awareness of available criminal legal data. These goals are at the core of our belief that data can help inform decision-makers, from elected officials to community-based organizations and advocates, and be used to see how we are doing in achieving public safety and health.
In the present day, public data takes on even greater importance. Newer data dashboards are being published and made available while others are being pulled down following administrative transitions at federal, state, and local levels. Broadly, in criminal legal systems and beyond, data and facts are often overlooked, denigrated, or even fabricated. Our office maintains a public data dashboard (https://data.philadao.com/) that provides timely statistics on key criminal legal metrics while allowing people to download data for their own analyses. The dashboard is the primary way through which we reach the goal of data transparency; it updates daily with information on incidents, arrests, charges, bail, case outcomes, case length, and future years of incarceration and supervision (see https://data.philadao.com/about.html).
Across the nation, we see other criminal-legal agencies publishing dashboards for data visibility and to better serve the public. One way we consider potential uses of data is to see how other jurisdictions are using data, and we thought this might also be helpful to the public. We are particularly excited by emergent integrative dashboards that seek to make timely information available about multiple jurisdictions in one place, helping with comparisons. This data story summarizes what we have discovered.
