PHILADELPHIA (March 12, 2025) — District Attorney Larry Krasner and members of the Gun Violence Task Force on Wednesday announced the conviction of Calvin Gatewood (DOB 5/2/97) for his role in the prohibited transfer of four firearms to known members of violent street groups. These firearms were later used to commit two homicides, three non-fatal shootings, and an attempted carjacking by members of the now-defunct ’02da4′ street group, whose members were arrested and charged by the DAO’s Gun Violence Task Force in December 2022.
Gatewood pleaded guilty on March 7 to four counts of Straw Purchasing (F2), one count of Conspiracy (F2), and related charges for his role in the illicit trafficking of firearms to juveniles in 2020 and 2021.
Specifically, Gatewood traveled to the Bunker Gun Shop in Warminster, PA, with then-17-year-old Anthony Woodson (who was not legally permitted to obtain firearms) to purchase two 9mm handguns on August 29, 2020. One of the handguns was later used by Woodson in a non-fatal shooting that occurred on the 3800 block of Parrish Street in Philadelphia’s Mantua section on January 16, 2021. Investigators recovered fired cartridge casings (FCCs) that linked one of the handguns to the incident. Woodson later pleaded guilty to the shooting. The other 9mm handgun was transferred to two other males who used it in an attempted carjacking in Bala Cynwyd in December 2020.
Approximately one month after the first two straw purchases, Gatewood and Woodson traveled to Tanner’s Sports Center in Jamison, PA, to purchase a Glock 9mm and a Glock .40 caliber handgun. Woodson later filed off the serial number from the .40 caliber handgun.
And finally, Woodson accompanied Gatewood to Clayton’s Range, located in Horsham, PA, where the defendant purchased a Glock .45 caliber firearm on October 2, 2021. Woodson subsequently used the weapon to commit a double homicide and non-fatal shooting on the 100 block of South 60th Street and another non-fatal shooting on the 6000 block of Walton Avenue, all of which occurred on July 4, 2021, in West Philadelphia. Woodson later pleaded guilty to these shootings too.
In addition to utilizing ballistic evidence located at the shooting scenes, investigators obtained a warrant to extract communications from Woodson’s cell phone, proving that conversations took place between the defendant and shooter about the planned gun purchases, among other evidence implicating Gatewood. He was arrested in September 2024.
Gatewood is scheduled for sentencing before Judge J. Scott O’Keefe on May 8, 2025.
“Thanks to this excellent prosecution by Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Palmer, Mr. Gatewood will be held appropriately accountable for trafficking crime guns that were used to sow death and mayhem in the community,” said DA Krasner. “I also want to thank the Gun Violence Task Force and Philadelphia Police Department for their painstaking investigation that brought Calvin Gatewood to justice. My office, in collaboration with our law enforcement partners, is committed to prosecuting not only the perpetrators of gun violence but those who illegally supply guns to these shooters as well.”
